Que l’histoire soit ou non réellement finie, voilà qui ne mérite sans doute guère d’être discuté. En revanche, si l’on veut bien admettre que ce qui a pris fin, c’est notre croyance en l’Histoire, alors il faut bien se demander avec Bertrand Binoche :
- Comment donc peut nous apparaître l’histoire même de l’Histoire, dès lors que nous ne croyons plus en celle-ci ?
- Si nous n’y croyons plus, à quoi croyons-nous donc à autre chose ou à rien ?
- Si nous n’y croyons plus, en quel sens nous est-il encore permis de légitimer quoi que ce soit ?
It is meaningless to wonder whether we have reached yhe end of History or not. But if we think that our belief in History has come to an end, we have to ask the three following questions :
- How does History of History come into our sight, since we do not believe anymore in History ?
- If we have abandonned our belief in History, is there something which we still believe in or are we believing in nothing ?
- If we do not believe in History anymore, how can we legitimate anything yet ?
